In this stunning revelation of a compelling historical mystery, Paul Argentini's story-telling masterstroke, The Fourth Nail, is in the overlay of the interrelated actions of two men born two millennia apart. In ancient times, we follow the destined path of Marius of Rome from his start as a profligate youth, to the Mid-east where he forges and uses The Fourth Nail to change the entire world forever. His challenge is to leave the love of his life and survive the dangerous journey on the Spice Trail back to Rome where he is determined to hide this all-powerful relic from covetous hands and to fulfill pledges. In today's world, Dr. Roberto Donadio as a matter of life and death desperately seeks to reveal the secrets of the Marius Diary. In his search he is constrained to unravel arcane codes, and translate ancient documents. It is a race against time as he travels the path of the Marius Diary on the Silk Road to an ancient lamasery past the Taklamaken Desert deep by Ancient Turkestan in Eastern China. There, before other horror-stricken witnesses, he sees the only copy of the Marius Diary Scrolls become lost forever to the winds and wilds of the mountains. Only his prescience and ingenuity enable him to learn the factual truth behind this, the greatest of all historical mysteries. This is Paul Argentini's most tense and exciting novel ever.

Page Count: 214
Trim Size: 5.5 x 8.5
Publish Date: January 1, 2012
Imprint: Milford House
Genre: Historical

by Preston Nuttall

The Amish Rebel:A Story of War and Faith and the men of the Confederate States Naval Academy

Fall, 1861. He has been groomed to handle the business end of his father's large cotton plantation. A deeply religious lad with an uncharacteristic aversion to slavery, James's father raised him to believe that unlike other negroes, the workers on Langdon Plantation were sharecroppers and not slaves. When James finds out that his father has deceived him, it sets up a conflict between the two men that takes a war to settle. When hostilities break out in 1861, he leaves home, ostensibly to serve the Southern cause. Instead, he embarks on his own mission to help slaves escape to Canada. Now considered to be a traitor and an outlaw by the South, danger is his constant companion; certain death awaits him should he be caught. The day after his 25th birthday, he decided it was time to head back to Montana and square accounts with the masked riders who had destroyed life as he had known and loved it. He was respected as a Ranger who was tough, but also for being fair and impartial--a man who followed the letter of the law. Every man was considered innocent until proven otherwise. He never let his emotions overrun his actions and he knew well this was one of the most important things that separated him from the men he hunted. But ... the closer he got to Red Lodge and the reopening of the old wounds he had run from ten years ago, the more he felt a fiery rebirth of the old rage he had tried to suppress. The strength of this strange, new darkness frightened and confused him and he quickly became aware of a battle which was forming deep within him that was every bit as dangerous as the battle he faced with his parents’ murderers. The capture of Vicksburg and its garrison was, if not the signature northern victory of the Civil War, at least among the top contenders. It denied the Confederacy free access to the Mississippi River, it split the South in two, and, perhaps most importantly, it ultimately persuaded Abraham Lincoln to appoint Grant commander of all Union armies. In the words of the sixteenth president: “I can’t spare this man. He fights.”

It may be inaccurate to say that Grant won the Civil War for the North, but there is truth in the claim. His success, first in the west and later in the east, was phenomenal. Was he a military genius? Probably not. But he had a keen sense for the opportunistic moment and the fortitude to pursue a course of action relentlessly, once chosen. The Taking of Lady Gibraltar illustrates these qualities—and some shortcomings—in an exciting and stimulating read for anyone who loves Civil War history and historical fiction.

Page Count: 452
Trim Size: 6 x 9
Publish Date: August 1, 2016
Imprint: Milford House
Genre: Historical
by John Timmerman

Davey O'Brien and his friends are just trying to get through seventh grade at the Calumet & Hecla school for miners' children. But trouble won't leave them alone. Conflict with the "townies", sons and daughters of mine bosses and store owners, is one thing. But then the miners go on strike, food becomes scarce during awful winter storms, and life itself grows uncertain as the miners square off against the owners' vigilante thugs.

Page Count: 160
Trim Size: 5.5 x 8.5
Publish Date: August 31, 2016
Imprint: Brown Posey
Genre: Literary
by Jess Steven Hughes

Britannia Romanus series: Volume 4

In Rome, when shaking hands with a stranger, you’d best count your fingers to see if they are still attached.

In 44 AD ancient Britannia is wild, unpredictable, and merciless. The novel traces an early nineteenth-century secret Italian document, The Permanent Instruction of the Alta Vendita, that maps out a generational blueprint to overthrow the hierarchy of the Catholic Church. The story takes place during the final phase of this conspiracy at a time when the Church is most vulnerable following the deadly sins of child molestation, the redefining of family and marriage, and the attempt to overthrow theological rigidity and conservatism. New York Medical Examiner and detective, Dr. Jeffrey Moss, fresh from solving The Mystery of the Milton Manuscript (Urim, 2014), leads the investigation of a young priest murdered at 452 Madison Avenue, the official residence of the Archbishop of New York. At autopsy, the examination reveals three gold pieces ingeniously hidden, two, of which, were designed for Pope Clement VII by Benvenuto Cellini, the great Italian Renaissance artist, and the third, a diadem originating from the earliest days of the Israelites in Egypt. Together with the brilliant archeologist, Daniella Teller, the duo delve into ancient biblical texts, Jewish and Christian history, the deepest secrets of the Masonic Brotherhood, and the internal strife within today’s Vatican to pursue the murderer. The plot turns to terror, including the attempted murder of the Pope himself, as Jeff and Daniella probe the secrets of The Vatican’s Vault that uncovers a conspiracy to destroy the Church and its Papacy.

WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING

In his second novel, The Vatican's Vault, Dr. Barry Libin offers a thriller that has something to say, though that never gets in the way of a unique and original story which combines elements of the police procedural with high adventure. A mysterious fire that involves Saint Patrick’s Cathedral interlocks with a search for a lost treasure in the title place, a hidden spot rarely visited by others than the Pope's chosen few. Based on twenty years of intense research, the author suggests that all is not as it appears. The real motivation behind the doctor’s decision to murder Van Dorn is not a story of jealousy between a husband and wife, but of loyalty and sacrifice. This story reveals one woman’s struggle with the blame for another’s crime and the secret that fractured the Peters family forever. Perhaps most compelling is the impact the tragedy has had on the Peters family, with the continued perpetuation of the 150 year old lie to this day.

by Bridget Smith
Page Count: 336
Trim Size: 5.5 x 8.5
Publish Date: May 26, 2015
Imprint: Milford House
Genre: Historical

Fiction / Historical

by John Timmerman

Ben McCallister returns to the peaceful valley where he grew up, only to find it torn apart in a range war. With lies and deceit on every side, who can he trust?

Page Count: 158
Trim Size: 5.5 x 8.5
Publish Date: September 12, 2015
Imprint: Milford House Press
Genre: Western

The Cogan, a mysterious stretch of Pennsylvania with towering hills, swooping trees and narrow roads, claims the life of a lovely young woman, best friend to Ann Fairchild, a passionate, headstrong girl of 18. Barely escaping with her life, Ann succumbs to shock and is unable to recall exactly what happened that cold, wintry day in the Cogan. The immigrant population fuels an industry but as individuals they wield little power over their daily obligations. Pietro tries to perfect a song for his grandfather Nonno as he gazes over the family vineyards in Piedmont, Italy. The musicality of the story kept me enthralled from the beginning. The love story of talented Pietro and honey voiced Assunta, inspired by true events, is a quintessential immigrant story. But it is also the tale of two lovers who cross paths only to be separated again and again against the backdrop of hard life of coal miners of Pennsylvania. Pietro’s melodies for Assunta kept me magnetized as much as their love amidst scarcity, and at the end, the musical threads coalesced into one poignant and powerful scene like the crescendo of an unforgettable symphony." - Madhu B. When Margaret stumbles across Isobel one day, it seems as though Isobel is commanding the dolphins in the ocean to dance. Margaret is enchanted. She becomes interested in Isobel’s magic, in fairies, and in herbal remedies; Isobel freely shares her knowledge. She has dark wishes as well, unknown to most people. Isobel seeks vengeance against the local lord who executed her mother for witchcraft. More important, Isobel’s trance experiences (or are they dreams?) lead her to confess to a wide range of sins, including consorting with the devil. Then, during her trial, Isobel names thirteen others, calling them all witches. To her great shock, Margaret hears her own name.
