Frazier, born and raised in Centre Hall, Centre County, holds a BS from Penn State and an MBA from Rider University. Growing up in a “Tom Sawyer” sort of way, he has always loved the Pennsylvania mountains and, starting in 1970, has collected their folktales and legends for over fifty years,. He self-published them in a series of eight volumes titled Pennsylvania Fireside Tales. Since the tales often sound “far-fetched” today, the author takes on the role of an investigative reporter to explore their origins, writing in a format that the average reader can enjoy. In 2024 he became a published author when Sunbury Press in Mechanicsburg came out with his three-volume series titled Pennsylvania Mountain Landmarks – subtitled “an armchair journey to some of the most unusual and inaccessible landmarks in the Pennsylvania mountains and the history and legends that surround them. Sunbury Press has also published expanded and improved versions of all eight volumes of the author’s Pennsylvania Fireside Tales series, with plans to also publish his Pennsylvania Fireside Ghost Tales. Readers can purchase the books through Amazon, Sunbury Press, or through the author’s website (pafiresidetales.com). The author continues to be a popular speaker, receiving many invitations to give his PowerPoint presentations to groups and clubs of all kinds, including the Writers Conference of Northern Appalachia held at Saint Francis University in Loretto, Pa., in May of 2025.

This volume, and subsequent volumes, include accounts of the author’s explorations of little-traveled byways and remote hilltops in the mountains of Pennsylvania. His descriptions and photos of the unique and unusual places he discovered will appeal to all those who seek adventure and who like to explore odd and mysterious places; places like the Devil’s Dining Room, the Indian Steps, the Thousand Steps, Ticklish Rock, Umbrella Rock, and many others that are highlighted in the Pennsylvania Mountain Landmarks series. Much to his delight he also found that there are human interest stories and historical accounts that cling to these same spots and which seem as old as the rocks themselves; tales, that are steeped in the spiritual charm of the Native American and imbued with the pioneering spirit of the Pennsylvania wilderness as it existed when the earliest settlers penetrated its dark interior. Such accounts are the stuff of which legends are made and which add color and mystique to the mountains, forming their very soul. It is this breath of life, hints of a less-complicated and more compelling past that led the author to find the spots where it still survives, and to bask in the local color and lore that surround those places.

In this volume:

The King’s Stool (Dauphin County)

Stairways to the Stars (Berks et al.)

Umbrella Rock (Elk County)

The Three Sisters (Huntingdon County)

Lewis’ Rock (Cumberland County)

Infernal Evidence (Clearfield et al.)

Memento Mori (Jefferson et al.)

Picture Rocks (Lycoming County)

Boxcar Rocks (Lebanon County)

Warriors’ Mark (Huntingdon County)

Vampire Rock (Clinton County)

More of the Same (multiple counties)

by Jeffrey R Frazier
Page Count: 120
Trim Size: 6 x 9
Publish Date: April 11, 2023
Imprint: Catamount Press
Genre: History

NATURE / Ecosystems & Habitats/Mountains
SPORTS & RECREATION / Hiking
HISTORY / United States/ State & Local / Middle Atlantic

This second volume in the Pennsylvania Mountain Landmarks series includes more accounts of the author’s explorations of little-traveled byways and cloud-capped hilltops in the mountains of Pennsylvania. our life's span seems extended, and we seem less mortal. It is with this background, then, that this second volume of Pennsylvania fireside tales is presented for the public's reading enjoyment. As explained in the first volume of this series, the title "fireside tales" comes from the fact that these stories and legends are variants of, or are exactly like, episodes that were related by early settlers sitting around their fireplaces on cold winter evenings when story-telling was the only form of entertainment by which to relax. Return now to those days of old when the pace was slower and life was harder. Keep in mind, however, that people then seemed content with their lot, finding pleasure in simple things like a wolf's howl, a panther's cry, a firefly's glow, or a flaming sunset sinking slowly behind the everlasting hills.

In this volume:

The Black Ghost of Scotia

Juniata Gap

Through the Veil

Snakes, Snakes, Snakes

The Lower Fort

Spellbound

Last of the Big Shots

Haunts of the Highway

More Snakes

Little Red Riding Hood?

Burned at the Stake

Ridden

Dead for Three Days?

Mollie Maguire Memories

Sitting with the Dead

The Throwback

Bloody Run

Beyond Belief

Jack’s Narrows

Nights in the Colby Narrows

Western Pennsylvania Wolf Days

by Jeffrey R Frazier
Page Count: 200
Trim Size: 6 x 9
Publish Date: April 16, 2024
Imprint: Catamount Press
Genre: History

NATURE / Ecosystems & Today that era still seems to beckon to us from the depths of cool mountain hollows and from the windy heights of Pennsylvania’s tradition-steeped peaks. And as the frantic pace of modern-day life increases, the allure of the old tales seems to grow stronger, drawing us back to a seemingly pleasanter and slower time when a good storyteller was appreciated as much as a good book is today.

In this volume:

Will-o’-the-Wisp

The Ghostly Lantern

Punxsutawney

A Trophy Buck

God’s Warriors

Man’s Best Friend(ly Ghost)

Raven’s Knob

Big Cats of the Big Woods

The Beaver Dam Witch

Council Rocks

Frozen in Time

Spitzbuben

Maids of the Mist

Bear Tracks

White Lady of the Gyp

Stragglers

by Jeffrey R Frazier
Page Count: 198
Trim Size: 6 x 9
Publish Date: August 20, 2024
Imprint: Catamount Press
Genre: History

NATURE / Ecosystems & Habitats / Mountains
HISTORY / United States / State & Local / Middle Atlantic (PA)
FICTION / Fairy Tales, Folk Tales & Mythology

Anyone wishing to unlock the secrets behind Pennsylvania’s treasure trove of old-time legends and folktales should read this book and its predecessors. Fascinating and unbelievable as some of these stories of ghosts, witches, Indians, and Pennsylvania’s early hunting days may seem, they often are based upon real events. Those “kernels of truth”, however, are often swept away in the unrelenting currents of time and lost forever unless someone can save them before they disappear. In this and other volumes in the Pennsylvania Fireside Tales series, each story is treated like a little mystery, and its origins are explored. it sounds so “far-fetched” that we can scarcely believe it’s true. Did it actually happen as the tale claims, or did the story just spring from the fertile imagination of a gifted storyteller? It’s an enigma that intrigued the author as well, and it’s that very mystery that prompted him to delve further into the tales to see if they contain any kernels of truth or if they have a basis in fact at all. His discoveries are not only surprising but also quite amazing.

In this volume:

<span style="font-family: Symbol; Those who incline to do so will also be driven to know what’s around that next bend in the trail and to discover the secrets that await. This volume, like its predecessors, offers readers suggestions to satisfy their wanderlust and provides directions to those places. For example, in this fourth volume, readers might be lured to the Indian Steps, The Devil’s Chair, Witches Hill, The Bloody Rock, or to Pennsylvania’s own Stonehenges. Photos of each of these and of the other sites described in this volume are included to enhance the reader’s armchair experience, as are the interesting historical accounts and human-interest stories that surround the landmarks and add to their appeal.

In this volume:

Some Pennsylvania Stonehenges (Northampton and Centre Counties)

The Devil’s Chair (Mifflin County)

The Landmarks in Elk State Forest (Elk County)

Lewistown Narrows (Mifflin County)

Indian Steps—Revisited (Huntingdon and Centre Counties)

The Bloody Rock (Wyoming County)

Witches’ Hill (Berks and Somerset Counties)

Half King’s Rocks (Fayette County)

by Jeffrey R Frazier
Page Count: 108
Trim Size: 6 x 9
Publish Date: September 30, 2025
Imprint: Catamount Press
Genre: History

NATURE / Ecosystems & places like the Devil’s Dining Room, the Indian Steps, the Thousand Steps, Ticklish Rock, Umbrella Rock, and many others that are highlighted in the Pennsylvania Mountain Landmarks series. Much to his delight he also found that there are human interest stories and historical accounts that cling to these same spots and which seem as old as the rocks themselves; tales, that are steeped in the spiritual charm of the Native American and imbued with the pioneering spirit of the Pennsylvania wilderness as it existed when the earliest settlers penetrated its dark interior. Such accounts are the stuff of which legends are made and which add color and mystique to the mountains, forming their very soul. It is this breath of life, hints of a less-complicated and more compelling past that led the author to find the spots where it still survives, and to bask in the local color and lore that surround those places.

In this volume:

The King’s Stool (Dauphin County)

Stairways to the Stars (Berks et al.)

Umbrella Rock (Elk County)

The Three Sisters (Huntingdon County)

Lewis’ Rock (Cumberland County)

Infernal Evidence (Clearfield et al.)

Memento Mori (Jefferson et al.)

Picture Rocks (Lycoming County)

Boxcar Rocks (Lebanon County)

Warriors’ Mark (Huntingdon County)

Vampire Rock (Clinton County)

More of the Same (multiple counties)

by Jeffrey R Frazier
Page Count: 120
Trim Size: 6 x 9
Publish Date: April 11, 2023
Imprint: Catamount Press
Genre: History

NATURE / Ecosystems & As in Volume 1, photos of the sites described are also included, which allow readers to gain a deeper appreciation for them. In addition, the human interest stories and historical accounts that cling to them are, as in Volume 1, presented as well, thereby adding that flavor and color that enhances their appeal.
