- In 1968 an Australian teenager narrowly escaped the clutches of  Philippines dictator Ferdinand Marcos. She lived to tell the tale ... for those who didn’t. -

A 17-year-old Australian girl—confined inside a very secret house of the Philippines president—struggling to overcome her fear as she recalls the rumor—when Ferdinand Marcos was a teenager, he was accused of murdering his father’s political rival in cold blood. In one chilling moment, she understands that this man will do anything to avoid an international scandal—anything. If she survives to tell her Filipino friends, they will leap to help her. Then they will  ‘disappear’. And so will she.

EXCERPT:
‘Colonel Ver leant across me, opened the glovebox, and pulled out a pistol. This is how I disappear...he will order me out of the car, murder me, and no one will ever know what happened.’

REVIEWS:
“A fascinating read. How an Australian schoolgirl fought off the advances of the  Philippines' most powerful president. A story never before told about a man who,  for once, didn’t get his way.”—Keith Dalton, Foreign Correspondent, author of Reinventing Marcos—from  Dictator to Hero

“Historians will find this thoughtful and engaging memoir captures Philippine society and culture in flux. General readers will be held in suspense as the author,  then so young and vulnerable, confronted the sexual advances of the notorious Ferdinand Marcos.”—Glenn N. Holliman, historian, co-author of The Amazing Life and Loves of Marjorie Fetter Goossens

Great Book

Just couldn’t put this book down! It was beautifully written and I felt as though I was there living the experience. Marcos was so persistent and sly and Stephanie, who was so young, had a frightening battle on her hands. This is a must read!

Brave young woman!

An absolute page turner! The courage and confidence of this young woman.. only 17 years old and navigating some very mature experiences with grace, bravery and courage. Amazing story and knowing it's true just makes it a book you can't put down! Congratulations to the author. Brilliantly written. I can highly recommend!

Lucky escape.

Amazing true story of a young exchange student in the 1960’s Philippines during the Marcos regime. Escaping the clutches of the man himself. A riveting read and very evocative of those times. I would highly recommend reading this true account.

Gripping!!

I had heard many of the stories from Steph, BUT when I got my hands on the hard copy it was very much a time costumer as I couldn't put it down as in each chapter and the heading title gave you a sense of 'wanting to know more' .... a page turner it is. Well done Steph x

Fun and Danger in the Phillipines

This book is a memoir of 10 months of Stephanie McCarthy’s life in 1968 while she was 17 and a Rotary Exchange student living in the Phillipines. It describes the people she stayed with, the multiple friends she made and the many experiences she had, some really memorable and some very challenging. This absorbing book is in three parts: her early months with her host families, her incredible meetings with President Ferdinand Marcos and a timeline of Marcos’s brutal rule until his death in exile in 1989. Apart from the host families there was little or no chaperoning provided which meant Stephanie had free rein a lot of the time. This of course was a surrealistic treat for a 17 year old girl. The book very colourfully describes her outings and adventures in her first experience of a tropical country. Her studies whilst there eventually led to an unbelievable (to Stephanie) opportunity to meet with the President of the Phillipines. Absorbing reading then turned into riveting reading as Stephanie trod a dangerous path. A must read.
