Whimsical Catherine (“Kitty”) and her strict-but-loving guardian enjoy a private, if uneventful, life as members of the rural gentry in a quiet English town—just the way Aunt Percival likes it. Though grounded in the unwavering morals and propriety impelled upon her by her station and her aunt, Kitty allows herself the indulgence of escaping to her cherished bower—the verdant site of her childhood recreation spent with her dear friends the Wynnes, who have since been orphaned and cast about to varying lots.

When Aunt Percival’s London relatives—the Stanleys—send word that they will visit Kitty's town for the summer, her placid life is stirred irrevocably. Shortly after arrival, Camilla Stanley becomes the gateway through which Kitty hopes to achieve her most ardent goal: reuniting the Wynne family members to each other and to herself.

After some convincing, Aunt Percival is begrudgingly persuaded that they should return the favor of a visit to London, at the Stanleys’ invitation. Here, Kitty meets a colorful cast of characters, including would-be suitors (to Aunt Percival’s panic and chagrin), Camilla’s high-society acquaintances, and even some faces familiar to Kitty herself. Unexpected romantic entanglements ensue, propriety is tested, and ruses are schemed, contributing to the humor and heartbreak of this coming-of-age story.
