The Great War erupts in Europe. A devastating pandemic kills millions worldwide. Children are working in mines and factories, and women are testing boundaries.

An explosion in a Pennsylvania coal mine robs four siblings of their childhood. They watch in horror as grim-faced men carry their fatally wounded father from the rubble. Thirteen-year-old Robert is now to become the head of the family; Ceci looks after her younger siblings; Ilona works in the silk mill while Rudi hides his fears and vulnerability behind false bravado.

Forces beyond their control will shape their destinies. When Ceci marries, she moves to a small house on Hazelton, Pennsylvania’s Peace Street, providing a place of hope and stability for those she loves. But world events intrude, tearing the family apart.

While Ceci waits for letters, Ilona’s passion leads her in unconventional and dangerous directions. Her brothers, Robert and Rudi, join the army and report to Camp Hancock in Augusta, Georgia.

The House on Peace Street is a quick-moving saga that follows a family’s trajectory as they struggle to find inner strength in a rapidly changing world.

A Captivating Family Saga full of life lessons

Virginia Rafferty, a master storyteller, recounts the lives of her working-class ancestors in the Pennsylvania coal fields in the early 1900s. Their struggles and triumphs, rooted in mutual love and commitment, are historical anecdotes and life lessons that resonate with modern readers. This family saga is not just a journey into the past but a mirror reflecting the resilience and strength of families today.

The first-generation immigrant story is a testament to the human spirit in difficult situations, with a bit of everything: joy, heartbreak, violence, love, warfare, and peace. Rafferty’s message is that families can overcome adversity through mutual support and commitment, regardless of obstacles. While this is not an “everyone lives happily ever after story,” the family's resilience shines through, and individual members achieve several life goals. The author highlights a courageous woman who leaves the family to break out of social and gender norms but returns to assist siblings in their time of need.

Perhaps the most potent message is the family's forgiveness of a wayward member who ran afoul of the law and separated from his siblings. A “black sheep” man would have been ostracized for life in many families. However, in Rafferty’s story, he returns, asks for forgiveness, and plays a crucial role in helping a sister in a desperate time.

In addition to life lessons, The House on Peace Street offers a fascinating exploration of societal issues. From the use of tobacco by coal miners to prevent Black Lung disease to the measures taken to control the Spanish Flu, the book provides a unique perspective on the challenges faced by working-class families in the early 1900s. It also sheds light on the harsh reality of child labor, a practice that was essential for many families to survive.

I highly recommend The House on Peace Street to help you better understand the 1900s social environment in the Pennsylvania coal mines and how not-well-off families can overcome horrific adversity and live satisfying lives through love and mutual commitment. Thank you, Ms. Raffety, for sharing your remarkable family story!
