- In 1968 an Australian teenager narrowly escaped the clutches of  Philippines dictator Ferdinand Marcos. She lived to tell the tale ... for those who didn’t. -

A 17-year-old Australian girl—confined inside a very secret house of the Philippines president—struggling to overcome her fear as she recalls the rumor—when Ferdinand Marcos was a teenager, he was accused of murdering his father’s political rival in cold blood. In one chilling moment, she understands that this man will do anything to avoid an international scandal—anything. If she survives to tell her Filipino friends, they will leap to help her. Then they will  ‘disappear’. And so will she.

EXCERPT:
‘Colonel Ver leant across me, opened the glovebox, and pulled out a pistol. This is how I disappear...he will order me out of the car, murder me, and no one will ever know what happened.’

REVIEWS:
“A fascinating read. How an Australian schoolgirl fought off the advances of the  Philippines' most powerful president. A story never before told about a man who,  for once, didn’t get his way.”—Keith Dalton, Foreign Correspondent, author of Reinventing Marcos—from  Dictator to Hero

“Historians will find this thoughtful and engaging memoir captures Philippine society and culture in flux. General readers will be held in suspense as the author,  then so young and vulnerable, confronted the sexual advances of the notorious Ferdinand Marcos.”—Glenn N. Holliman, historian, co-author of The Amazing Life and Loves of Marjorie Fetter Goossens

Unique memoir

Part memoir, part political drama "The Tyrant and the Teen" tells a reflective story. It keeps you interested as a teenager navigates a different country's society, risks and an extraordinary encounter.

Presence of mind wins the day.

Enthralling! Terrifying in places but overall, a most worthy addition to the historical record and a compelling insight into the potential for menace that resides within the human condition. What was that about power corrupts?

McCarthy’s description of the Phillipines in the late 60s is rich in colour and atmosphere yet succeeds in gradually building towards the harrowing… spine-chilling indeed, close call to which a young woman was subjected. An exemplar into the author's admirable presence of mind under horrifying duress.

A very brave 17year old

Wow I couldn't put this book down, listening to the vivid details of her adventures were wonderful as if I was with her myself.
I felt worn out at times lol. The beautiful friends she made along the way, and those scary moments stood out too.
And very sad to hear that she lost those beautiful souls that will forever be in her mind.
A great read, especially as I am not on top of the political trail from back then.

Incredible encounters

An enthralling account of the author’s amazing and risk-filled adventures as an uninhibited and intrepid 17-year-old Australian girl living in the Philippines in 1968. This captivating autobiography with its vivid descriptions of stunning landscapes and glimpses into the fascinating and diverse cultures of the Filipino people has ignited my interest in learning more about the extensive history and remarkable geography of the Philippines.

Great story

My friend Stephie told me parts of this story when she returned from the Philippines. Reading this interesting book filled in the full details of her narrow escape. Such a long time waiting to tell the story but still worth the wait. So sad to think of those who weren't so lucky who she was so close to.
