— from James M. McPherson, Princeton University, author of Battle Cry of Freedom — "Paul Semendinger has produced a unique volume that is a combination reference work, collective biography, and narrative of the battle of Gettysburg. In all of these capacities, it will be of great value to anyone interested in the American Civil War, especially its biggest and most famous battle."
The Battle of Gettysburg was one of the most important struggles in the history of the United States of America. That battle is one of the most written-about events in U.S. history. The battle has been discussed, debated, refought, and retold countless times, but no author has ever told the story of the battle in a manner such as this. In West Point at Gettysburg, author Dr. Paul Semendinger tells the story of most of the most significant officers at the battle, the ones who graduated from West Point and served with the Union or Confederate forces. Each West Point graduate has his story told in the pages of this comprehensive three-volume series. The stories of these men, all need to be told, and remembered. The long grey line is together, once again in West Point at Gettysburg. Included in this volume:
- The West Point Graduates at Gettysburg by Graduation Class
- The West Point Graduates Promoted for Actions at the Battle of Gettysburg
- The West Point Graduates at Gettysburg Who Achieved the Rank of General
- The West Point Graduates at Gettysburg Awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor
- The West Point Graduates with Individual Monuments at Gettysburg
- The West Point Graduates Killed or Mortally Wounded at Gettysburg
- The West Point Graduates at Gettysburg Buried at West Point Cemetery
- The West Point Graduates at Gettysburg Buried at Arlington National Cemetery
- The Organization and Structure of the Armies
- Troop Strength on the Eve of Battle
- The West Point Graduates Within the Order of Battle at Gettysburg
- Map of Gettysburg, July 1863
- A Brief Overview of the Action Taken by Each Corps at Gettysburg
- Understanding the Layout of the Soldier Pages
- The West Point Graduates at Gettysburg Biographies
Praise:
"Wonderfully conceived and presented. WEST POINT AT GETTYSBURG is rich with detail for the scholar and general reader alike."—Jim Remsen, co-author of Back from Battle and Embattled Freedom
“A thoroughly researched and unique chronicle of the West Point graduates who served in the battle, offering insights for all readers interested in the Civil War.”—Thomas K. Clancy, author of Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness
“This is a work of historical importance that will be appreciated by anyone interested in the Civil War in general, but more especially in the Battle of Gettysburg in particular and the men who fought and died there. Your book adds a colorful breath of life to their memories!”—Jeffrey R. Frazier, author of Pennsylvania Fireside Tales (vols 1-8)
“Professors at West Point taught cadets how to be officers and lead men into combat, but could not foresee that friends and barracks mates would clash near Gettysburg in July of 1863. Dr. Semendinger’s first of three volumes has compiled details on West Point graduates (A to G) in that battle, both North and South, including official reports. His research shows how well those officers had been taught to command soldiers in such a cataclysmic battle. West Point at Gettysburg should be on every Civil War shelf.”—Alan D. Gaff, author of On Many a Bloody Field: Four Years in the Iron Brigade

Paul Semendinger’s book is an amazing work of scholarship; impressive in both scope and depth. Not only does his book identify the West Pointers who fought for both the North and South at Gettysburg, but it also gives their first-hand accounts of their battlefield experiences and descriptions of the battle. In addition, it describes, in their own words, why they made the decisions they made in leading their troops during the battle. Also included are interesting historical facts on each West Pointer, right down to their academic position in their West Point graduating class, the ranks they held throughout their careers, and what they did after they left the army. This is a work of historical importance that will be appreciated by anyone interested in the Civil War in general, but more especially in the Battle of Gettysburg and the men who fought and died there. This book adds a colorful breath of life to their memories!
Visiting the Gettysburg Battlefield more times than I can count, I did not realize how many of the leaders from both sides on that fateful day were graduates of the West Point Military Academy. In his first volume in a series Paul Semendinger identifies close to 150 West Point graduates from famous names as Major General Winfield Scott Hancock, Major General George Custer, Lieutenant General A. P. Hill and Major General George E. Pickett to lesser names as Brevet Lieutenant Colonel Adelbert Ames, Colonel Goode Bryan, Lieutenant Ira W. Calef and Captain Daniel W. Flagler. The author cites those graduates that received the Medal of Honor during the battle and those graduates with individual monuments on this sacred battlefield.
Semendinger provides an informative overview of the actions of both the Union and Confederate Corps during the battle which provides the reader a clear understanding of complexity of the battlefield. The main body of the author’s work details the West Point Graduates with surnames starting from “A” through “G”. From his thorough research for each graduate the author provides individual images, pertinent and detailed information to include dates of birth and death, burial locations, major battles, rank history and their individual action during the Gettysburg battle.
An extremely well researched work presented in a logical progression. Anyone interested in the Civil War will enjoy this book and especially those interested in the Battle of Gettysburg and who may have ties to the West Point Military Academy. I’m looking forward to Volume II.
