Someone she knows is watching.

Someone she knows is stalking.

And something hides in the darkness.

Twelve months ago, a violent injury ended Kate Park’s career with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission. Now she’s returning home to her little beach town and teaching boat safety classes while her body heals. Maybe she’ll even mend the estranged relationship with her caustic younger sister. But time is running out.

As the Florida West Coast braces for an approaching Category 4 hurricane, Kate uncovers a corpse in the churning Gulf waters. Then another. And another. It’s no longer her job to get involved, but she can’t help investigating. And the clues reveal all three victims have one thing in common: a connection to her sister.

In a brewing storm of rage, guilt, and family secrets, she confronts her bitter sibling and faces a childhood better left buried with the bodies washing ashore. To unravel the threads of this mystery is to come to a frightful realization.

Run from the water.

Hide from the wind.

Flee from the shadows where a weeper seeks revenge.

Action-packed thriller when a hurricane and a serial killer collide!

JC Gatlin seems to have found his stride with this new release. His complex yet quirky characters are well-developed, likeable, relatable, and memorable. His writing reflects a maturity not only in the individual characters but also in the themes of family loyalties, forgiveness of self and of others, and acceptance that there are always multiple possible interpretations to explain a chain of events.

Not to spoil the surprise ending for the reader, a serial killer is leaving a body count of people peripherally involved in the judicial exoneration of a drunk driver charged with the death of a five-year-old boy. Gatlin skillfully weaves into his story motives and opportunities for several of his characters for these murders. While I think of myself as a competent sleuth, I did not see Gatlin’s ending coming. Nor was I prepared for the roller-coaster emotional ride of the hurricane that struck the coast of west Florida. The realism of Gatlin’s descriptions of the approach and arrival of the hurricane would have been enough to get my adrenalin flowing, even without the terror of the pursuit by an elephant-masked killer of the protagonist in the last few chapters.

This is a fasten-your-seat-belt ride that I’d highly recommend.
