The Great War erupts in Europe. A devastating pandemic kills millions worldwide. Children are working in mines and factories, and women are testing boundaries.

An explosion in a Pennsylvania coal mine robs four siblings of their childhood. They watch in horror as grim-faced men carry their fatally wounded father from the rubble. Thirteen-year-old Robert is now to become the head of the family; Ceci looks after her younger siblings; Ilona works in the silk mill while Rudi hides his fears and vulnerability behind false bravado.

Forces beyond their control will shape their destinies. When Ceci marries, she moves to a small house on Hazelton, Pennsylvania’s Peace Street, providing a place of hope and stability for those she loves. But world events intrude, tearing the family apart.

While Ceci waits for letters, Ilona’s passion leads her in unconventional and dangerous directions. Her brothers, Robert and Rudi, join the army and report to Camp Hancock in Augusta, Georgia.

The House on Peace Street is a quick-moving saga that follows a family’s trajectory as they struggle to find inner strength in a rapidly changing world.

Wonderful Historical Fiction

This engaging, elegantly written and well-researched historical novel features a Pennsylvania family struggling with mine explosions, a world war, and women’s rights. A compelling and worthwhile read.

Heartfelt

The character vignettes woven lovingly through this tale remark in vivid terms the hearts of a people of a bygone era. Yet there are universal experiences that transcend historical fiction--the same love, loss, grief and redemption that have connected humankind since hearts started yearning. All of it stitched by a home, a locale, a shared dream, and the beautiful soul of a strong and determined woman. The house on Peace street is the kind of book that affirms your faith in human goodness.
