“In Anna, Harris gives us a courageous woman who refuses to let the boundaries of privilege or ethnicity dictate her heart. Even as the pain of displacement, economic uncertainty a heart-rending tragedy test her resolve, she finds her strength through kindness, forgiveness and love. An inspiring story and a sparkling debut.” —Katherine A. Sherbrooke, author of The Hidden Life of Aster Kelly

"The Immigrant’s Wife shows a real talent for character, place, period. JB Harris moves in Edith Wharton's circle, both in talent and tone." —Dan Weaver, editor in chief of Nation Books, Faber & Faber, Inc., senior editor at Viking Penguin and McGraw-Hill,

Not all men who abandon their families are scoundrels. A story of love and perseverance set when consumption ravaged America. Anna Patrinos is deserted by her husband. What she doesn’t know is he anonymously exiled to a TB sanatorium to protect her and their unborn baby from the deadly disease and the ruinous cost of his care. Anna’s battle with ostracism, starvation and assault to keep herself and her child alive interweaves with Charles’ fight to survive and return home to his family, which is complicated by his one night of indiscretion. Reunited, Anna and Charles confront what it means to belong and whether love is enough to heal their devastated lives and start anew. Harrowing but ultimately hopeful, The Immigrant’s Wife is a compelling story of self-sacrifice, resilience and devotion.

A sweeping character-driven drama with a strong female protagonist

"The Immigrant's Wife" tells the story of a young American woman named Anna who marries a Greek immigrant in the early 1900’s, and the hardships they faced defying societal standards of the day. When her husband mysteriously disappears, she must raise their child alone and without the support of her family. The author delivers a tale about finding strength and hope against unsurmountable odds. The characters are real and engaging and the dialog is spot on. I highly recommend for readers who enjoy sweeping, character driven dramas with a strong female protagonists.

A novel difficult to put down

The Immigrant’s Wife is a novel with unexpected twists and turns. The characters are vividly portrayed, and the reader will feel their joy, love, suffering, and at times desperation. Throughout the novel, as the characters struggle with prejudice, illness, and poverty, there are references to the promise of the 20th century that are yet to be realized.
Anyone who enjoys reading historical fiction will find The Immigrant’s Wife a novel difficult to put down.

The Immigrant's Wife

A well-researched historical novel regarding daunting circumstances in a dangerous time when tuberculosis threatened the American population. The characters are well-drawn and the tale is haunting and compelling. I recommend this book to readers who appreciate informative and atmospheric historical fiction.

Portrait of the Past

A deftly written romance with its feet firmly planted in historical fiction. Harris weaves a poignant, very human tale of endurance and hope in the face of xenophobia, illness, and poverty. Each character feels alive and cared for and the romance sings throughout the pages, even in the darkest of moments. It moves quickly and is written with immense care and grace. I highly recommend this polished debut.

Five stars

A compelling historical fiction story set in the early 1900s. Anna is a young woman from an upper-class Boston family, Charles is an immigrant from Greece. They fall in love and face the discrimination so common to that era—not just from society, but from the very people they love the most. What follows is a story of hardship that tests Anna and Charles’ faith in God, society, and their devotion to each other.
“The Immigrant’s Wife” is very well written and thoughtfully paced. The novel sticks tightly to its main characters (a good thing), but also expands in scope when the story demands it, such as Charles’ prolonged stay in a TB clinic (the historical elements of the clinic were an eye-opener to me) and Anna’s heart-wrenching struggles in Charles’ absence (Anna’s story is the classic 3 Rs story—Rebel, Ruins, Redemption.) This is a well-researched and ultimately uplifting novel in which the characters become more and more real to you as you read. You feel their pain, understand their motivations, and root for them to overcome their mostly-dire circumstances. Five stars.
