The Dance of Death has appeared in many editions and forms over the centuries. This newly edited version includes 49 woodcuts based on paintings by Hans Holbein the Younger. The carver is believed to have been Hans Lutzelburger or Hans of Luxemburg, made in the early 1500s. Many of the quatrains included in the book are attributed to Gilles Corozet. These and the Bible verses have been translated to English. The book was originally published in 1533. The introductory text in the front matter was written by English poet Austin Dobson (1840 - 1921). The verses and images are stark reminders of mortality regardless of one's station in life.
